Sarah Spector’s Brilliant Abstracts Kick Off the First Show of 2012 at the Marin Coffee Roasters
Sponsored by the San Anselmo Arts Commission, Ross Valley artist Sarah Spector, shows her new of work body through April 5
San Anselmo, CA.-February 10, 2012- From a very early age, Sarah Spector drew and painted. In her teens she began using color pastels to portray the qualities of natural light falling on objects. She began to form a substantial body of work that included portraits, nudes and interiors. She came to focus on still life, experimenting with abstracting the picture plane while focusing on light, color and as always, the line and sphere.
On graduating high school, Spector moved to a farm in Israel, and after several years of college in the U.S., moved to France to teach and paint. When she returned a few years later, Spector went back to school to earn an MFA from The American University in Washington, D.C. She went back to Europe, but returned that year to accept a job teaching art in high school in the Metropolitan Washington D.C. area.
Still teaching, she continued painting and exhibiting her work in galleries. Her abstracted still life’s evolved into a purer formal abstraction influenced by non-objective painters like Richard Diebenkorn, Mark Rothko and Grace Hartigan. She began to work with acrylics and collage and hasn’t looked back since.
Spector is always painting and creating. For the past few years she has experimented with other materials. "Acrylics don't compel me quite the way they did before," remarks Spector, "as for example, wax or watercolors, which are more mutable and earth-friendly. I'm interested in the relationship of the body (inner system) to its environment (outer system).”
Another important aspect of Spector’s life is her practice as a body- and energy worker. “A healer," she says, "is someone who perceives subtle energies and works with them to effect transformation (change). That is a lifelong practice.” Spector’s work reflects this discipline and is often felt as powerfully transformative.
Sarah Spector’s show starts February 4 and will run through April 5. An opening for the artist is scheduled on Saturday March 17 from 4:30 to 6:30pm.
