UPDATED: San Rafael Cyclist Killed in Collision with Car in Inverness Park

A San Rafael man cycling in West Marin was killed after he collided with a car this afternoon.

The victim, identified as 79-year-old David Hauer, fell into a passing vehicle near 12301 Sir Francis Drake Blvd. in Inverness Park. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

A preliminary report by the California Highway Patrol said the cyclist appears to have fallen into the path of the vehicle, according to CHP Officer Andrew Barclay.

The bicyclist and the vehicle were traveling east on Sir Francis Drake Boulevard around 12:30 p.m.

The vehicle started passing the bicyclist, and when the front of the vehicle was past the bicyclist, the bicyclist appears to have fallen in toward the vehicle and onto the ground, Barclay said.

The bicyclist was then run over by the vehicle's the rear wheels, according to the male driver's account of the fatal collision, Barclay said.

The vehicle driver heard a loud noise and stopped and has been extremely cooperative with the investigation, Barclay said.

The collision happened in front of Perry's Deli at 12301 Sir Francis Drake Blvd. A woman who answered the phone at the deli said the bicyclist was an older man.

Sir Francis Drake Boulevard is a two-lane, undivided road in the collision area, and it's unknown if there is a bike lane there, Barclay said.

Sir Francis Drake Boulevard was closed until 3:38 p.m.
