Cyclist Hit While Riding Through Cross-Walk
Accident are common when cyclists ride, instead of walk, bikes through intersections.
A 55-year-old man was hit by a car while riding his bicycle through the intersection of Sir Francis Drake and San Francisco Boulevards at 1:11 p.m. this afternoon, something that San Anselmo Detective Corporal Julie Gorwood said has been happening with increasing frequency.
According to the Police Department, the man was treated for minor injuries before being released from the scene. The driver of the car, an 82-year-old woman from San Anselmo, wasn't injured.
The cause of the collision is being investigated, but there is no evidence that the driver was under the influence of alcohol or drugs.
In fact, said Gorwood, if a cyclist rides his or her bike from the sidewalk into the crosswalk, then the cyclist is legally at fault. More people need to remember to walk their bikes in the crosswalk, she said.
In this case, the man was riding through the crosswalk and the driver was making a left turn and failed to see the cyclist. It is a difficult intersection, she pointed out, because of the lack of room on Sir Francis Drake Boulevard. In that case, said Gorwood, "walk, then ride."

I live very near that intersection, and have many times been surprised by people in the crosswalk, it is rather dark, and hard at times to even see that anyone is crossing, not surpised that this happened.

It's difficult to bike around SFD, in general, you can't bike in the street -- at least I won't; it's too dangerous and there's no room -- and if you bike on the sidewalk, you risk serious injury at every intersection.
I just avoid the street all together.

I'm thinking the 82 year old driver had something to do w/ this one. SFD is a good one to avoid on the bike, but it looks like this cyclist was just crossing. Just like "100's" of Brookside, Manor & Drake students daily. Hey bikers - be aware. I like to preach you go when they (cars) stop - but not before.

Amen to that.
