David Weinsoff wanted to post this comment, but couldn't: Charles Snowden Fairfax, who would have been the 10th Lord Fairfax had he renounced his US citizenship and returned from Virginia to England. Instead, he headed west to California in 1849, taking up politics, and becoming the Speaker of the California State House in 1851. He married Ada in 1855, moving to the Town that would bear his name, settling on the property they named "Bird's Nest Glen" and we know as the Marin Town and Country Club.
An excellent history of early Fairfax is found in Bill and Brian Sagar's "Images of America Fairfax."
