Leaf's Olympic Volleyball Team to Face Italy

The Marin Academy graduate's Olympic volleyball team has played two matches in the preliminary round.

graduate Savanah Leaf and her team will be facing Italy in the preliminary round for women's volleyball for the London Olympics.

After two matches in the preliminary round, Leaf, who was born in London and is currently playing for the Great Britain team, has stacked up four spikes, five hits, two rebounds, two digs and seven shots, according to the London 2012 website.

Leaf is the newest team member for Great Britain. Although she was born in London, her family moved to San Anselmo in 2001 when her mother, Alison, got a job at Lucasfilm’s Industrial Light & Magic in San Rafael.

On July 28, the British squad went up against Russia and lost 0-3. Leaf started the first set when the squad went against Algeria on July 30, and was substituted out at the end of the first set.

On her way to becoming a sophomore at University of Miami, the 18-year-old put her studies on hold to compete for a spot on Great Britain’s team.

“I know we will turn heads, and surprise people around the world,” before the matches began. “We are ready to take on all the different varieties of players from around the world, and we are ready to win.”

The Great Britain team will face Italy on Wednesday, Aug. 1. and then the Dominican Republic on Friday, Aug. 3. The final round begins on Aug. 6.
