Mountain lion sighted

Don't feed deer; don't leave food outside.

Last night, at approximately 10 p.m., a resident reported a mountain lion on Raymond Avenue. The animal, he said, traveled towards Laurel Avenue and then up the fire trail.

San Anselmo Police responded to the report and searched the area with negative results. The California Department of Fish and Game and the Marine Humane Society were informed about the possible sighting.

The officers also went door-to-door in the neighborhood and distributed a warning, along with pamphlets from the Department of Fish and Game with advice about avoiding run-ins with mountain lions.

The Police Department is reminding residents not to feed deer -- it is illegal in California and will attract mountain lions. Residents are also advised not to leave pets outside at dawn, dusk, or during the night when lions are most active. Pet food should also be brought inside to avoid attracting raccoons, opossums, or other mountain lion prey.

If you do encounter a mountain lion, do not run. According to the police, you should, instead, face the lion, make noise, and try to look large by waving your arms or throwing rocks. If attacked, fight back.
