Summer brings fresh favorites and cold treats

Ice cream, fresh produce, summer eats for locals.

I know it's freezing and dreary and cold in San Francisco, but lucky us, we really do have seasons here in the Ross Valley. Though not the warmest July ever, there is no doubt in my mind that summer is here. And it's not just about the weather—neighbors slow down to chit chat, kids are out riding their scooters and bikes, and the lines at Fairfax Scoop grow longer by the day.

Not only are ice cream sales up, our farmers markets and farm stands are also doing a brisk business with their plump and juicy stone fruit and fresh beets, squash and greens. Even a purveyor of all things green has opened its doors in San Anselmo and boasts an array of healthy foodstuffs (to purchase online) including everything from organic granola to eco-friendly cleaning products.

So, if you're looking for some tasty things to do right in your own 'hood, I have a few enticing suggestions.

A new wine bar in Fairfax opened its doors just a few weeks ago. Next door to Café Sorella, 123 Bolinas is serving up California wines and a small menu of items prepared with locally sourced products. The best thing about this place — they offer "smidges" or small tastes that allow for sampling a variety of wines. Cheese and charcuterie plates along with salads and pasta also available in the sleek space with furniture made from wine crates. Check it out at www.123bolinas.com.

Pack up the family with a picnic dinner and join neighbors and friends for Picnics on the Plaza in downtown San Anselmo. The Friday Farm Stand stays open and local musicians provide entertainment. Bring a blanket or snag one of the tables set out on the lawn in front of the Town Hall and have some fun. Picnics on the Plaza are planned for almost every Friday night in August from 5-8 p.m. So don't miss out — mark your calendars now!  August 6, 13, 20 and 27.

If you're in the mood for something a little more lively, everyone knows that Fairfax is always hopping. Every Wednesday throughout the summer from 4-8 p.m. in Bolinas Park, the farmers' market gets into full swing with a band, face painting, and numerous vendors. The Roti chicken guys are always there and so are the folks dishing out their delicious Himalayan fare. Even wood-fired pizza is in the mix.

If your own garden is going gangbusters don't let your 89 bell peppers and bags of cucumbers rot in the fridge. Gardeners can bring their extras to a weekly garden bounty exchange on Saturdays from 3-4 p.m. in front of Town Hall in San Anselmo, or to Sustainable Fairfax at 141 Bolinas Avenue from 3-4 p.m. Let the bargaining begin!

For those with specific dietary concerns or just interested in all around healthy living, visit the newly opened Pomegranate Marketplace on Belle Avenue in San Anselmo. Order gluten free products, organic foods and eco-friendly cleaning products online at www.pommarket.com and then pick up your order at 11 Belle Ave. (at San Anselmo Avenue). For pick up times, hours and more information, visit them online.
