Marin's Oscar-Nominated Movie Makers Eye Big Night

Local nominees will be in the hunt at the Academy Awards this Sunday.

  As in typical nearly every year, several Marin residents will be among those competing in this weekend's 84th Academy Awards. While some of the biggest movie makers in Marin are well-known, the filmmaker leading the Oscar charge this Sunday is relatively unknown. Novato photographer Robin Fryday is nominated for her short documentary The Barber of Birmingham. Along with being her first Oscar nomination, it was also her first film as director. This is not the first nomination for Mill Valley resident Ren Klyce, however. Klyce was nominated for sound editing and sound mixing on The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, to go with last year's nomination for sound mixing for The Social Network. Comedian Arj Barker Reflects on Marin Upbringing

The breakout stand-up comic talks Drake High, the Throckmorton and some of his early influences.

  Whether spoofing Eve Ensler, doing an animated show with his cat, appearing in HBO's much-beloved Flight of the Conchords or telling jokes on stage, Arj Barker has found his calling in the world in the comedy. But before all that, he was just Arj Barker, Marin County resident.  Barker lived in Marin off-and-on until he was 25-years-old, with brief stints in San Francisco, Los Angeles and elsewhere. In the intervening years, he has amassed a rabid following in Australia, where lives most of the time. Still, Barker always make a point of visitng and staying in Marin anywhere from a couple weeks to a few months of each year. "I refuse to commit to one place!" he said. Trident's Return Revives Film Hopes

With waterfront restaurant's owners planning renovations and changing the name back to its hippie haunt moniker, a Marin native hopes to get a movie idea in the hands of one very famous former busboy.

There might not be much overlap between the people who will flock to the Bay Area for the America’s Cup in 2013 and those who want to immerse themselves in the nostalgia of the sex, drugs and rock and roll era. But Bob Freeman wants his waterfront restaurant in Sausalito to be the nexus between those crowds. After landing approval from the Sausalito Planning Commission last month, Freeman and his partners closed Horizons restaurant this week for a six-week renovation that adds an upstairs dining deck and significantly expands the building’s outdoor, America’s Cup-friendly seating. “With the America’s Cup coming around, this is going to be the place to be,” Freeman said.
