In Marin, Many Compostable Materials Go Straight to Landfill

Despite proliferation of biodegradable foodware, those products aren’t being composted at the two waste management facilities in Marin. As a result, people’s choices might not be as eco-friendly as they think.

Greenwood School 8th grader Leyla Spositto and her classmates knew something was amiss just a few weeks into the school year when they saw the trash piling up. Greenwood administrators had chosen San Ramon, Calif.-based Choicelunch as the school’s new lunch provider largely because nearly all of its packaging was made of compostable materials – from corn-based bio-plastic cups to potato-based “spudware” forks and spoons – and therefore would be diverted from the landfill. The move fit with one of the school’s core values of environmental stewardship. But when Greenwood environmental science teacher Julie Hanft told the students that so-called bio-plastics weren’t being composted in Marin, Greenwood’s 7th and 8th graders, who handle the …

I couldn't agree more on digging deeper, especially when we're talking about engaging student curiosity. I take issue with the implication that compostable bioware use is a greenwashing technique meant to mislead consumers. That is not always the case. When Choicelunch first started exploring biowares in 2006, we did so with the understanding that commercial composting that could break down these…   more ›

The Scoop

New Wine Bar, Good Earth and Amazing Grace

Lots going on in our Ross Valley this week.

Good Traffic for Good Earth The new Good Earth store has been packed since it opened and there is no end in sight for the hugely successful new location. Big, clean, crisp, fantastic -- these are the words this writer is hearing about the new digs, and from what I’ve seen from the outside (and the great Patch video!) it is clearly a hit with more than a few. I keep saying I’ll wait until the crowds disperse to hit the aisles, but that isn’t happening any time soon. Congratulations on a job really well done! Any business that moves in across the street can’t help but do well with all of the new traffic, and the soon-to-be Avatar restaurant will surely be among those. Wonder what will happen to the now vacant (but likely not for long) old …

New Good Earth Store Opens

Ribbon cutting Wednesday morning welcomed hundreds of eager residents.

The new Good Earth store in the long-empty Albertson's at Fair-Anselm finally opened Wednesday morning with a celebratory ribbon-cutting from Mayor Pam Hartwell-Herrero at 10:30 a.m. The opening was delayed after Indian remains were found on the site. Sierra Salin was the first customer, buying a chocolate bar and sharing it with the cashiers. You can see a video of the store during their preview/soft opening this past weekend -- as employees had a dry run making all the new prepared foods and drinks. Tell us what you think of the new shop in the comments below.

The store looks great! Parking lot is full and lively. Now if the FairAnselm plaza and the rest of the town could make an effort to look as nice.   more ›

I Wish This Was A...

What Do You Want to See at Papa Murphy's?

Rumors have been abounding about the old pizza location. What do you wish was there?

San Anselmo-Fairfax Patch is featuring vacant or abandoned buildings or lots and asking readers: "What do you wish was here?" The idea was inspired by Candy Chang from New Orleans, who in 2010 created "I wish this was" stickers and placed thousands around the city for residents to fill in the blanks. Stickers can be bought online here.  The old Papa Murphys has been empty for well over five years and rumors have been swirling recently about potential clients hoping to lease the location. But, the space remains empty. What do you wish would go in at the south end of town?

Nice article! I've been shopping at the San Anselmo store since 1986, and I can say that they are competitive, they do pay attention to changing food needs... and if you ask for help there, you do get it....   more ›

See the New Good Earth Before it Opens

Take a video tour of the store, which opens on Wednesday.

After much work, the new Good Earth building at Fair-Anselm Plaza will open this Wednesday, Feb. 15 at 11 a.m. after a ribbon-cutting at 10:30 a.m. The current Good Earth, on Sir Francis Drake Boulevard, will be closed on Tuesday while operations are moved to the new location. JF - 'Like your posts. I plan to be a regular at the new GE and perhaps pay a little more. I'll shop selectively, but I'm gonna make a habit of spending there more often. For 2 reasons. Food Villa & Albertsons. Let's recall that these were businesses gone bad where the good folks @ GE completely renovated the dumps. Food Villa was the dump of dumps and contributed almost no tax rev. Albertsons …   more ›

Fairfax Will Hold Special Smart Meter Meeting Tonight

The council will hold a special meeting tonight to consider the CPUC Smart Meter opt-out decision.

The Fairfax Town Council will meet in a special session tonight, Feb. 13, at 7 p.m. at the Women's Club to discuss the Smart Meter issue. The California Public Utilities Commission (CPUC) recently approved a plan to allow residents to opt-out of PG&E's controversial digital wireless meters -- as long as they pay a fee to do so. Fairfax, which still has a moratorium on the meters, has been at the forefront of opposition to the program. The only things on tonight's meeting agenda: What - if anything - do you think the council should do?

As for the plan, it has all the elements of classic extortion. A smartmeter is mounted on the consumers home while he's not home. He pays through the nose for the new smartmeter (as all ratepayers do), suffers health effects over time, then pays an added amount to opt-out. What about the poor apartment dweller with 25 meters right outside his/her bedroom? He needs to be an accomplice to the crime…   more ›
