FOCAS Yoga for Toddlers and Parents. Get us to our mats! Where Imagination Meets Yoga

Guest Article by Anne Mannes FOCAS Yoga for Toddlers and Parents Get us to our mats! Where Imagination Meets Yoga

The pulse of parenthood races at breakneck speed. We’ve gotten used to it or at least for many of us, we are still trying to get use to it.  To keep up with all that needs to happen in one day is overwhelming from remembering to pack extra wipes to making sure our little angels have their apples and pears perfectly cut.  Day after day, there always seems like there is more to do.  And then comes… Amy Renn’s Yoga for Toddlers class offered via Fairfax Open Circle Arts and Sports (FOCAS) at the Women’s Club in Fairfax on Thursday mornings at 9:15am.

It’s at this charming building in Fairfax on our 3 x 6 mats where my daughter and I can live beyond the reach of time, begin using our imaginations and get some much needed time to stretch before facing our day.  After years of practicing yoga, I’m finally learning that, on the mat, time is on my side. But moreover, that imagination is at our core and a lot of fun.

The FOCAS class that Amy teaches is full of imagination, fun and is different each week.  While we do sun salutations, down-ward-dogs, mountain pose and more we are led through a series of imagination exercises that transport us into other worlds.  Amy is creative in coming up with age-appropriate ideas that reinforce our connection to nature, animals and our heart center.  We go on sleigh rides and are transported by boat, airplane and bicycles to jungles and countries far away.  We encounter polar bears, snakes, butterflies, and birds as we move our bodies to reflect our true nature.

Connecting with our breath and imaginations inspire us and help us pause.  It is at these moments of relaxation when ideas are at their best.  Whether we are going to the zoo in our minds during yoga class or headed to Antarctica, the same thing happens:  our minds open,  our bodies stretch and for a few precious moments,  time is on our side and we expand.
