Diversity and Property Values
Independence Day reminds me once again that we are a nation of immigrants. People thrown together from around the globe all in search of better lives and something the movie star John Wayne called The American Dream.
But if you think for one moment that The Duke would put up with the kinds of people occupying downtown Fairfax most days of the week, then you've got another think coming. I am talking about the effeminate boys that take up the Parkade with their chai teas and $5 coffee drinks. If the Duke were here you could bet that the Fairfax Parkade would return to the days of señor citizens strolling, or sitting on a bench chatting.
The reason all of this comes to mind is property values: The unseemliness of some people wanting to just let it all hang out (so to speak) chips away at the property values that many of us have worked so hard to attain. Putting it bluntly, other peoples lifestyles are killing my home equity! (And since these are probably renters, my views trump theirs).
There is a time and place for everything. Can we all agree to bring these alternative lifestyles back behind closed doors, where they belong? And let's encourage our war veteran seniors and their wives to once again feel safe strolling the Parkade.
