Quality of Life Commission chair quits post

Woody Weingarten has unexpectedly stepped down as chair of the Quality of Life Commission after six years.

Weingarten, who’s been on the panel since 2005, cited a family health issue as the main reason, and expressed deep regret at his need to resign. He intends to remain as a member of the panel until his current two-year term ends in April 2015, however.

A special election to replace him as chair will be held at the commission’s regular meeting Monday, Oct. 21, the effective date of his resignation.

During Weingarten’s tenure, the commission has begun a “Connect the Green Dots” lecture series; handed out 60 monthly Green and Silver awards to unsung heroes; marched with electric cars in the San Anselmo Country Fair Day parade, and staffed booths both there and at the Marin County Center Eco-Fair.

The panel also has promoted a weekly garden exchange and an organic food stand on the lawn of Town Hall, free parking for plug-in electric vehicles, and the removal of book bins that curtailed revenue for the public library.

It has endorsed the town’s Climate Action Plan, the Deep Green option of Marin Clean Energy, recycling (including cloth diapers, batteries and athletic shoes), the boycotting of plastic water bottles, rejecting Styrofoam containers, stores not stocking rodenticides, climate-friendly landscaping, spruce-up days and shrub-trimming, unplugging home electronics when they’re not in use, home composting, picking up dog poop, Earth Hour, shopping locally, and a $49 library parcel tax.

It has also offered tips on saving energy and water, using public transportation and bicycles instead of driving, carrying reusable bags into supermarkets instead of utilizing either plastic and paper, substituting LEDs, eliminating junk mail, and certifying businesses as green.

The nine-member commission currently has three vacancies. Anyone interested in being appointed can pick up an application at town hall or download one from www.townofsananselmo.org.
