Marin County Touts Repairs to Sir Francis Drake Boulevard

By Bay City News Service:

After a year and a half of construction, Marin County officials gathered Thursday to celebrate the completion of 5.4 miles of repairs and upgrades to Sir Francis Drake Boulevard.

The road, Marin County's most direct east-west link and a heavily used access route for tourists visiting the Golden Gate National Recreational Seashore, Point Reyes and the coast, has been under construction since August 2012, county officials said.

The project was divided into three phases to help deal with difficult terrain and environmental concerns along the roadway, which passes through habitat for the northern spotted owl, California red-legged frog, the western pond turtle, coho salmon and steelhead trout, officials said.

The first phase involved the repair of a slide and the construction of a 212-foot retaining wall.

The second phase included pavement repairs on 1.5 miles of roadway from Shafter Bridge to Irving Bridge in Samuel P. Taylor State Park.

The third phase, starting in June 2013, included 3.9 miles of repairs to pavement and more than 60 storm drains, and was completed in January.

A ribbon cutting was held to celebrate the completion of repairs on Thursday at 2 p.m. at the group picnic area in Samuel P. Taylor State Park in Lagunitas.
