A Marin County chapter of the National Alliance on Mental Illness will host a meeting next week on estate planning for family members suffering from mental illness.
The meeting will feature a presentation by San Francisco attorney Baron L. Miller, who specializes in estate planning for mentally ill beneficiaries.
Miller is a frequent writer and speaker on the subject. His 38-year-old daughter has schizophrenia.
The meeting aims to explain how to establish a special needs trust as part of an estate plan, preserve assets for a person with a mental illness, enable a person with a mental illness to receive supplemental financial assistance while remaining eligible for public assistance, and identify the requirements for a trustee, including information on the Proxy Parents Foundation of PLAN of California.
The meeting will be held at the Connection Center at the Marin County Wellness Campus (Room 110) 3240 Kerner (near Bellam Ave) in San Rafael on Monday from 7 to 8:30 p.m.
Visitors can prepare for the meeting by visiting NAMI.org. Enter “estate planning” in the search box and select “Special Needs Estate Planning Resources”, and then selecting "Guidance System."
