Occupy Protest Brings Out Hundreds

People protest in San Rafael focused on the Super Committee's vote Nov. 23.

About 200 people gathered in front of Bank of America in downtown San Rafael Thursday evening as part of the national Occupy movement, but specifically focused on the Congressional Super Committee's deficit reduction plan that will be unveiled Nov. 23.

"We've been planning this for months," said Pat Johnstone, of MoveOn Marin. The event, focused on the Super Committee's vote, happened to coincide with the two-month anniversary of the Occupy movement, bringing out scores of people.

The Marin Peace and Justice Coalition, Occupy Marin, and a number of other political groups brought out members on Thursday afternoon to join in the protest that took up nearly a block in downtown San Rafael.

Marin residents waved signs and passersby honked in support throughout the two-hour protest. The biggest cheer, though, came for a San Rafael Fire Department engine that waved and flashed its lights in support -- prompting applause and cheers from the crowd.
