Get Out: Patch's Weekend Planner for June 17-19

Saturday:

The mission of the Marin Open Garden Project is to connect people with their local foodshed and encourage sustainable living. Backyard gardeners are encouraged to bring their excess fruit, vegetables, flowers, seeds, seedlings, and other goodies to the San Anselmo Town Hall lawn and  exchange with other gardeners.

Friday, Saturday and Sunday:  

This Father’s Day weekend, the First Base Foundation continues its highly competitive 19-and-under, wood-bat tournament to honor Johnnie Baker, father of Cincinnati Reds Manager Dusty Baker. First Base Foundation is a grassroots organization devoted to supporting student athletes both on and off the baseball field. This event will showcase the skills of a large group of talented, young athletes from around the Bay Area as well as 11 other teams from the greater Western US. With scouts present at many of the games, this Father’s Day Tournament will provide an important opportunity for players to be seen and get recognized. The tournament will take place in five different field locations: Marin Catholic in Kentfield; Redwood High School in Corte Madera; in San Anselmo; Campolindo High School in Orinda; and College of Marin, in Kentfield. Take the family to see a free tournament featuring the highest level of competitive baseball in the Bay Area.

Saturday:

Grab your favorite paddleboard and head out to Stinson Beach for the 4th Annual Shore to Shore Paddle Race bright and early on Saturday. The 2011 Shore to Shore Paddle Race begins at Brighton Beach in Bolinas and finishes at the Stinson Beach Lifeguard tower. Proceeds from the event benefit the Stinson Beach Junior Lifeguard Program and Surfrider Foundation. Paddle the 2.75-mile short course or go for the gusto and paddle the 7-mile long course. Paddle your surfboard, stand up or prone paddle board, outrigger, canoe, kayak—if you can paddle it, you can race it!

If you go: Adults are $50 and minors are $30. Race day registration begins at 7:30 a.m. and the race begins at 9 a.m. sharp. Shuttle service is available from Stinson to Bolinas starting at 7 a.m. Personal items can be left in drop off area at start of race and will be transported back to finish line.

Saturday and Sunday:

The Marin Art Festival is our county’s lawn party for the arts and “one of the most beautiful out door art festivals in the nation.” The event now in its 15th year, features work from over 250 artists from across the globe who are eager to share their work and discuss their creative process. The festival will host an artist preview and silent auction as well as continue it popular hourly raffle for “art bucks,” $100 towards the purchase of art with participating artists. The festival is full of color and surprise and offers a unique line-up of entertainment including whimsical stilt walkers, hands-on art projects for children, live music featuring some of the best Bay Area bands and fresh delicious oysters from Drakes Bay Oysters. As is tradition, Taiko drumming starts off the festival each morning. Back by popular demand will be the Marin Dance Showcase Stage featuring many dance styles from Hula to Hip Hop! This year's Master Artist is Tom Killion of West Marin. His woodcut prints of California and the Sierras are internationally celebrated.

If you go: Admission is $10. Children 14-and-under are free. The festival is from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. at the Civic Center Lagoon Park, Civic Center Dr. & Memorial Dr. in San Rafael.
