Marin Residents Rack Up Oscar Nominations, Again

Marin residents have always been well-represented at the annual Academy Awards. And this year’s 83rd Oscars will be no different.

Though some of our most famous movie-makers are well-known (seen George Lucas at recently?), there also many lesser-known honorees right from our own backyard. 

Mill Valley’s Ren Klyce (born and raised) will be competing in the sound-mixing category for Social Network. Klyce has previously been nominated for sound-mixing for Fight Club and The Curious Case of Benjamin Button.

Marin’s writing-team for Toy Story 3 was also nominated. Michael Arndt, who wrote the screenplay, and John Lasseter, Andrew Stanton, and Lee Unkrich, who wrote the story, will vie for the writing award. Kentfield resident Unkrich also directed Emeryville-based Pixar’s Toy Story 3. The movie was also nominated for Best Film and Best Animated Feature.

Former San Anselmo resident David Fincher is nominated for Best Director for Social Network. Fincher will go up against part-time Marin residents Ethan and Joel Coen for Best Director for True Grit.

Another San Anselmo resident, George Lucas’ Industrial Light and Magic and Skywalker Sound got a number of technical nominations. ILM, based in the Presidio after moving from San Rafael, was nominated for Best Achievement in Visual Effects for Iron Man 2. And Skywalker Sound, located off Lucas Valley Road (named for a different Lucas) and with countless Marin employees, was honored with four nominations, including Toy Story 3 for Best Sound Editing, Tron: Legacy for Best Sound Editing, Inception for Best Sound Mixing, and The Social Network for Best Sound Mixing.
