San Anselmo Student Wins Congressional Art Competition

Congratulations to Kalyn Peterson, a Sir Francis Drake High School junior who was announced as the winner of the 2013 Congressional Art Competition.

Her artwork, titled “Sad Clown on Cardboard,” was selected as the top entry in the high school-level contest for California’ Second Congressional District, which spans from the Golden Gate Bridge to the Oregon border.

Congressman Jared Huffman recently held a reception for finalists in his San Rafael District Office.

The contest finalists included Sophomore Royal Duyndam of Sebastopol, Sophomore  Cheyenne Autumn Baxter of Ukiah and Senior Mira Eagle Weidman of Arcata.

The winning artwork will be exhibited in the U.S. Capitol Building for one year, along with artwork from each Congressional District in the country. Peterson will receive two round-trip tickets to Washington, D.C. to attend a ribbon-cutting ceremony and reception for the new display on June 26, 2013.

The judges selected the winning painting because of the "intentionality of each brushstroke," use of color, and technique. Judges for the finalists included Mark Perlman, Professor of Studio Art – Painting & Drawing at Sonoma State University; Suzanne Joyal,Director, Artists in Schools at Marin Youth in Arts; Sharon Maidenberg, Executive Director, Headlands Center for the Arts.

“I’d like to congratulate Kalyn Peterson for her outstanding entry and to recognize all of the participants for their hard work and dedication to the arts,” Huffman said in a release. “I am proud that so many high school students submitted art to the 2013 Congressional Art Competition. This is a unique opportunity for a North Coast student to join her peers across the nation in showcasing their art in the U.S. Capitol Building.”
