Fire Destroys Fairfax Condo, Sends Two to Hospital

There were 39 firefighters from six different agencies at the building to battle the evening blaze.

A fire devastated a three-bedroom Fairfax condominium Sunday night at 4 Penny Lane, in Oak Manor off Sir Francis Drake Blvd., and displaced multiple residents.

The blaze was reported at 10:02 p.m. and fire crews, including 39 firefighters from the Ross Valley Fire Department, Marin County Fire, Kentfield Fire Department, Larkspur Fire Department, San Rafael Fire Department and Corte Madera Fire Department, had the blaze under control at 10:29 p.m. 

One female and one male were sent to Marin General Hospital with burn-related injuries, according to the Ross Valley Fire Department. Three other adults were treated and released at the scene for smoke exposure.

Ross Valley firefighters first arriving at the scene saw large flames coming from the front of the building.

Both floors of the two-story 1,386-square-foot condominium were destroyed in the fire and an adjacent unit had smoke damage on both floors. The estimated loss is at $200,000.

The cause of the fire is under investigation, according to Ross Valley Fire Department Public Information Officer JoAnne Lewis.

Ross Valley fire officials said the Red Cross is assisting one displaced resident and the Marin Independent Journal has reported neighbors on either side of the burned unit were displaced.

Ross Valley Battalion Chief Jim Hanson told the IJ the condo will have to be gutted and rebuilt.
