Proposed Fairfax Chevron Fuels Controversy

Opposition to the proposed chain gas station and adjacent Extra Mile convenience store grows ahead of a Dec. 4 Town Council meeting.

Opponents of a proposed chain gas station in Fairfax are gearing up for a showdown with their Town Council, and if their rhetoric is any indication, it’s a good bet they’re not interested in the supposed benefits of Techron.

“No Chevron in Fairfax” has started a Facebook page gathering support for their efforts to block lawmakers from approving a proposed gas station and convenience store.

And they’re planning to give the Town Council an earful at their next scheduled meeting on Dec. 4.

Opponents say the chain gas stain and other chain businesses don’t fit the quaint town’s character.

“Not only do we not need Chevron in our little town, we need a Public Bank here instead of Bank of America,” Patch reader Marilena Silbey said in an email to Patch.

“The little 7-11 got grandfathered in when the town created rules against chain stores coming in. That is plenty!”

Opponents of the gas station could be facing an uphill battle though.

The Department of Planning and Building Services has issued a staff report recommending the council approve a conditional use permit for the 2001 Sir Francis Drake Boulevard parcel as a gas station and convenience store.

The parcel between Claus Drive and Azalea Avenue is zoned for a gas station and is the site where Fairfax Gas operated until about two years ago.

The applicant is listed as Ron Jacobs of PM Design Group and the owner is Arash Salkhi.
