Top O' the Irish Morning! How 'Bout Some St. Paddy's Fun?

Here are a few options for entertainment on St. Patrick's Day.

Your last name could be Yamasaki, Holtzkopf, Johanssen, Abdul-Rahim, Rodriguez — whatever — but today you are part Irish.

Put a capital O and an apostrophe after your surname today just for fun. Even President O'Bama likes to get into the St. Patrick's Day spirit.

You have several fun choices today for holiday entertainment in Novato. At least three establishments will feature Irish music, and lots of restaurants will feature traditional Irish fare on their menus.

Let's take a look at a few of those entertainment options:

— At on Rowland Way, the Contra Costa County Sheriff's Department Pipe Band is scheduled to march through the restaurant with pipes and drums blazing at about 6 p.m., according to proprietor and full-blooded Irishman Brendan Moylan. The pipers will take a break for refreshments, play again and then head down to Moylan's sister ship, Marin Brewing Co. in Larkspur, in time for an 11 p.m. performance.

Moylan said it's been about 12 years straight that sheriff's deputy Ryan Sullivan brings in his band for a session at Novato's only brewpub.

"The place just goes crazy when they come in," Moylan said. "It's like the Giants winning the World Series. It's kind of special. It's good to see the community get together for some holiday spirit."

— Aton South Novato Boulevard, owner Sam Jarjoura brings in the MacIntosh Pipe band for a 30-minute performance in the parking lot at Nave Center, near the . He said they plan to start at about 5:30 p.m. before they head down to Jarjoura's other eatery, the Roast Haus Hof Brau at Northgate One shopping center, for another half-hour show.

"It's been a tradition for about 10 years, ever since I had the Hof Brau (at the Sam's Place location)," Jarjoura said. "We've kept the tradition going because people love it."

— At in Old Town, Southern California fiddle player Sarah Dabby will play during a special brunch that starts at 10 a.m. and continues to about 1 p.m.

"Everybody is Irish on St. Patrick's Day," said owner Henry Hautau. "It's going to be interesting because it's happening on a Saturday. The last time that happened, Finnegan's wasn't open yet."

Hautau said his staff has ramped up orders on corned beef and cabbage for the evening, but the best item at brunch will be the corned beef hash with eggs.

— At , San Marin High graduate and USC music student Carl Oser will sing and play keyboards starting at 1 p.m. Oser has performed with the USC Concert Jazz Orchestra, the USC Vocal Jazz Ensemble and the USC Concert Choir in addition to leading his own projects including his jazz quintet.

— If you're really into beer, check out the Fairfax Brewfest, where Moylan's and Novato-based Beltane Brewing will pour fine ales along with 19 other craft breweries. It's at the Fairfax Pavilion.

I'm going to switch my iPod to an all-Irish selection today — U2, Boomtown Rats, Thin Lizzy, Pogues, Snow Patrol, Chieftains ...

Brent Welcome back, and don't forget Van Morrison!

Please don't be offended, but I'm not a classic rock guy. I know Van is Irish — and he lived in Fairfax for a long time, so he's local, too — but my classic rock is the Sex Pistols and the Ramones.

Offended, never! Fine by me, up to you to reconcile the dichotomy of Johnny Rotten/sex pistols and snow patrol! Glad you're back, rock on
