Back to School Tips

Believe it or not, kids are already headed back to school.  Now is a good time to remind children and parents how to safely return to school. Whether your children are walking, being driven, or riding a bicycle there are a few tips to ensure they are as safe as possible.

If kids are walking

·         Map out a safe route to school and walk it with your child for a few days so they become familiar with the way.

·         Make sure your child crosses at intersections where there is a crossing guard.

·         Have children wear bright clothing that can be seen by drivers.

Riding or driving in the car

·         Everyone wears their seat belt and use age-appropriate child care seat/booster seat.

·         If you have a teenage driver, remind them of safe driving, use of seat belts and cell phone restrictions.

On a bicycle

·         Make sure they wear a helmet

·         Teach them to ride in the same directions as traffic, on the right side of the road.

·         Explain the “rules of the road” and to obey all traffic signs and signals.

·         Put your child in bright clothing to increase visibility to drivers.

Tips for driving in a school zone (especially during drop-off and dismissal times):

  • Slow down. The simplest thing any driver can do when there are new driving hazards is slow down.
  • Allow More Time. As a new school year begins allow yourself more time to get where you are going until you can figure out the effects of increased traffic.
  • Stay Alert. School is back in session, be aware.
  • Learn the Rules. Schools usually have places for parents to drop off and pick up children. If you are driving your child to school learn where these areas are and follow the procedures.

Never block pick and drop off areas.

  • Yield to Pedestrians. Remember to yield to children/parents in crosswalks. When a pedestrian is in a crosswalk they have the right-of-way.
  • Carpool. If at all possible carpool with other parents to pick up and drop off children.
  • Talk with Teen Drivers. Remind your teen drivers about the importance of being extra careful in and around school zones.

Be safe and enjoy the school year.

Log Cabin Needs Work

The American Legion Post 179 is having a fundraiser on Saturday, October 12, 2013 to raise money for restoration and maintenance of the historic Log Cabin in Memorial Park.  The Log Cabin building is 80 years old and has some serious issues that need attention.

The fundraiser will be an elegant evening at the Log Cabin with appetizers, cocktails, a silent auction, live music, and an opportunity to view a video of the building of the cabin.  The American Legion event coordinators need donations of food, wine, and auction items.  They are also taking monetary donations.

Please contact Ellen Boesner at 453-1434 or email sakamp@comcast.net if you can help with this event and the preservation of the beloved “Log Cabin.”

Dinner Under the Stars

Sponsored by the San Anselmo Community Foundation, the Dinner Under the Stars event will be a fundraiser to benefit the new Imagination Park.  More than twenty of our finest local restaurants will provide their signature dish, with an open bar by Bartenders Unlimited, entertainment by the award-winning Sir Francis Drake High School Jazz Band and members of the Marin Baroque Chamber Choir and period instrument orchestra, Music Director Daniel Canosa.

Tickets can be purchased at http://www.sananselmochamber.org/calendar_display.html?ID=1346.  For more information, contact the San Anselmo Chamber of Commerce at 454-2510.

Library Teaching Garden

Have you seen the teaching garden that the Library is tending?  It is out in back of the Police Department, near the back door of the Library.  The garden is growing in leaps and bounds, and is currently sporting a gigantic orange pumpkin, lots of green beans, beautiful purple eggplants, peppers of several varieties and tomatoes of all shapes and sizes.

On Saturday, September 7, at 11 a.m., in the Council Chambers, join Marin Master Gardener Joe Jennings for a one-hour class on vegetable selection, planting, weather considerations and soil preparation for September and October vegetable gardens in the Ross Valley. Plan your plantings, prepare for frost and rains and adjust for declining hours of sunlight.  For those that would like to help plan cool weather veggies in our Library Teaching Garden, we will do so after the program.

For more information, contact Supervising Librarian Renée Hayes at 258-4656.
