9/11 Dedication, Town Facebook Pages, Step Back into History

Looking back, both ten years and further.

Sept. 11 Memorial Dedication

On Sunday morning, over 200 people stood outside the downtown fire station to participate in . The memorial was created by the Ross Valley Firefighters Club, after one of the staff was able to obtain a piece of twisted steel from the World Trade Center.

The dedication ceremony was one of those magical events where everything seemed absolutely perfect for the occasion: the heartfelt messages of those who spoke, the ringing of the mourning bell during the national moment of reflection, and the playing of taps at the end. The audience, which included firefighters, police officers, representatives of United and American Airlines, residents, kids, babies and dogs, was held as one in rapt silence by the gravity and meaning surrounding them.

The dedication of Fire Chief Roger Meagor bears repeating:

“. . . As we stand here today, 10 years later, the debris is gone from Ground Zero, in its place a memorial to all those who perished on that sunny September day.  The memorial is bringing new life to the site, including trees and the largest man-made waterfalls that sit in the footprint of the twin towers. Around the waterfalls are etched the names of those who perished that day.

Let this monument placed here recognize the nearly 3,000 victims of the attacks and all those who risked their lives to save others . . .brothers and sisters who were sworn to duty. . .who rushed into those buildings that day . . . and saved hundreds of lives. . . many only to lose their own life.

This day will always be etched in our hearts and souls as we continue forward in our pursuit of freedom, justice and liberty for all.

This monument is hereby dedicated to bear solemn witness and remembrance of the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001. Today we honor those 343 firefighters and all who lost their lives on September 11, 2001.”

The memorial stands as a reminder of that tragic day. Many thanks to the and the Ross Valley Firefighters Club for this very meaningful contribution to our community.

San Anselmo, Time After Time

The San Anselmo Historical Commission invites you to see a new display in the hallway outside the on the lower level of the . San Anselmo resident Gregg Olsson has created an intriguing series of images of San Anselmo using modern technology to merge historical and current-day photographs.

Olsson says that one of the inspirations for his work was the 1970 novel Time and Again by Jack Finney. In the novel, a man travels back to the 1880s in New York using the threads that connect past and present—specifically the architecture that survived the years and still surrounds him in the 20th Century.

With San Anselmo’s well-documented history and numerous architectural threads that survive to this day, Olsson was able to create images that allow us to step back in time and see the town as it was and some of the ghosts of its past.

Many thanks to Gregg Olsson for his creative work on this display.
