New Councilmember Appointed

At the meeting of Tuesday, April 23, the Town Council appointed Liz Dahlgren to fill the unexpired term of Lori Lopin for the period from May 2013 to November 2013.   Liz Dahlgren will be sworn into office at the Town Council meeting of Tuesday, May 14.   Many thanks to all the candidates who applied for the position.  The Council was fortunate to have four very qualified applicants for the position.

Congratulations Liz Dahlgren!

Volunteer of the Year Award

The Town Council is calling for nominations for the Town’s first-ever Volunteer of the Year Award, honoring those who make a difference in our town.  The award is sponsored by the Friends of the San Anselmo Volunteer Effort (SAVE).

Selection of the award winner will be based on the following criteria:
• The significance of the volunteer’s accomplishments, whether past or present.
• The quality, scale and duration of the benefits to the community resulting from the individual’s accomplishments;
• The amount of time and energy devoted to the community beyond the scope of normal volunteer responsibilities;
• The extent of previous recognition received by the individual (e.g. the extent to which the nominee is an “unsung” hero.

The winner will be chosen by a Selection Committee that will be composed of two Town Councilmembers, selected by the Mayor, two staff members and a Friend of SAVE.  The Committee will hold a meeting to discuss the qualifications of the award nominees and to select the award winner.  Nominees should be current and active volunteers for the Town of San Anselmo.

At the Committee’s discretion, two outstanding volunteers may be selected to receive an award in the event of a “tie,” or the award may be given to a group representing a team accomplishment.

The Volunteer of the Year award winner will be honored on Sunday, June 30, at a special Volunteer Recognition Event, designed to honor the Town’s many volunteers and their valuable contributions to our community.

Quality of Life Green Award

At the meeting of Tuesday April 23, the Town Council presented the Quality of Life Green Award to Jo Ann Richards for volunteering for many years at bike coalition events and for serving as the secretary of the Quality of Life Commission.  Congratulations Jo Ann and thank you for your service.

Dog Owner Reminder

I’d like to remind dog owners about a San Anselmo ordinance about dogs.

Persons walking dogs in San Anselmo are required to clean up after their pets.  This means that you should be prepared to clean up after your pet on any public property, or private property that isn’t yours. You are responsible to dispose of it in a sanitary manner.

It really isn’t a hard law to comply with.  When walking your dog, carry along a plastic bag for cleanup, and dispose of the bag in a trash can when you get home.

The benefits of this ordinance are great for our whole community.  Parks, sidewalks, front lawns, and gutters can be waste free and all residents can walk without worry.

Everybody has to do his or her part, however, to keep San Anselmo dog waste free.  Avoid a fine and carry a plastic bag on walks with canine friends.  Together we can make San Anselmo a model of cooperation.

Weed Abatement

As we can all see, weed season is here.  The weeds are once again merrily taking over our medians and parks.

Town Public Works crew members are working very hard to knock down the weeds quickly this year.  It is a battle that we don’t always win.  For example, one of the first medians to be mowed was the Miracle Mile, but the grass came back quickly, thanks to a little rain followed by a lot of sun!

Town staff is committed to using no herbicides in the control of these weeds, per the direction of the Town Council, in consideration of keeping our community healthy and safe.  The price to be paid, however, is that the removal of our extensive weed growth takes a lot of person hours.

Nevertheless, we are committed to continuing to mow down the weeds as quickly as we can, to keep our Town looking good!
