San Anselmo: Police Department News, Town Hall Tower, Grant Success

Police Department News

On Saturday, July 19, there was a small fire in one of the Police Department offices.  The fire started in a computer that apparently overheated, causing damage to the office and its contents.  Smoke from the fire spread throughout the building, leaving an acrid odor behind. Restoration professionals are in place cleaning the Police Department, Town Hall and the heating and air conditioning system.  The offices on the second floor have continued to be open for business, but the Police Department had to be closed to the public for the entire week.  We regret any inconvenience this has caused and expect to be back to regular business soon.

Town Hall Tower

The Town is completing a project to repair damage to the Town Hall Tower caused by rain water and nesting birds. The project will restore the peak of the roof that was removed in the 1930’s to accommodate a radio transmission tower.  In addition, the exterior of the entire Town Hall complex will be repainted for the first time in over 25 years.

The anticipated project duration is Monday, July 21, 2014 to Friday, August 29, 2014. During this time there will be periodic closures of certain entrances to Town Hall and the Library to maintain safe public access. Signage will be provided to direct the public to alternate entries.

We apologize for any inconvenience during this time of improvement to your Town facilities.

Grant Success!

The Town has been awarded a number of grants that will vastly improve our infrastructure, including bridges, streets, sidewalks, trail access and parks. Many of the projects are multi-year projects, and one, the Memorial Park Detention Basin, is just entering the environmental phase, where it will be determined if the project is feasible or not.  The grants, which total over $20 million, are described below.

•          Federal Safe Routes to Schools sidewalk infill and accessible curb ramps in various neighborhoods around schools ($617,795)

•          TAM Local Streets 14-15 funds allocated by the Transportation Authority of Marin (TAM) ($152,000)

•          CalTrans funding to rebuild the bridge over the creek at Nokomis Avenue. The total grant is for $2,396,000.  The amount authorized for design is $670,000, but scheduled to be expended this year is approximately $335,000.  There is no required match for this bridge grant.  The remainder of the grant will be spent in subsequent years as the project progresses.   Funding for the entire project has been allocated but construction has not been authorized by CalTrans.

•          CalTrans funding to rebuild the bridge over the creek at Madrone Avenue. The total grant is for $2,415,400.  Funds authorized for design are $664,000; scheduled to be expended this year for design is approximately $332,000.  There is a required match of 11.5% that is anticipated to be covered by the County of Marin Flood Zone 9 Flood Fee. The remainder of the grant will be spent in subsequent years as the project progresses.    Funding for the entire project has been allocated CalTrans but construction has not been authorized.

•          CalTrans funding for the bridge over the creek at Center Blvd.  The total grant is for $5,817,000.  Conceptual design funding is $140,000 for the replacement of the bridge and subsequent roadway changes.  All $140,000 is scheduled to be spent this fiscal year. There is a required match for this bridge grant of 11.5% that is anticipated to be covered by the County of Marin Flood Zone 9 Flood Fee. Subsequent funds will be available for the design and construction phase of the project.    Funding for the entire project has been allocated by CalTrans but construction has not been authorized. Including conceptual design, funding for the entire design is approximately $1,060,000 and will be authorized upon approval of the conceptual design.

•          Integrated Regional Water Management Grant (Prop IE-IRWMP) for the Memorial Park Detention Basin.  Total grant is $8.7 million and there is a 50% match that is anticipated to be covered by the County of Marin Flood Zone 9 Flood Fee.  Approximately $1.48 million will be expended this year for the California Environmental Quality Act (CEQA) process to assess feasibility.  The remainder of the grant will be spent in subsequent years if the project progresses.

•          CalTrans grant to build the Red Hill/Sunny Hills Trail ($80,000).  The grant requires a 100% match with in-kind labor and materials, much of which will be supplied by the Open Space Committee.

•          One Bay Area Grant (OBAG) for Bolinas/Sir Francis Drake Blvd. intersection, ADA, sidewalk and roadway improvements ($300,000).  Scheduled to be expended this year for construction is $150,000.

•          Low Impact Development (LID) Grant for Magnolia parking lot, the Greenfield parklet and debris pad at the Corporation Yard ($546,517).  There is an in-kind match of 22%.  Scheduled to be expended this year is $50,000.
