Patch Picks: Five Books for Read Across America

San Anselmo Librarian Linda Kenton offers up five books for a week of reading.

This week, in honor of Dr. Seuss, San Anselmo-Fairfax Patch is offering you five favorites for kids to Read Across America. Theodor Seuss Geisel celebrated his 107th birthday yesterday -- at least he would have if the man behind the Cat in the Hat was still with us. In honor of the whimsical adventures of Dr. Seuss, Read Across America is an annual event to inspire kids to read, Read, READ!

San Anselmo Librarian Linda Kenton offers us her all-time favorites -- some are pictures books, some are for bigger kids -- so you can read with your young one every day of the week.

· Owl Babies by Martin Waddell -- In this picture book, three baby owls wake up to find their mother gone. When will she be back? Where did she go? What are those scary noises?

· Tuck Everlasting by Natalie Babbitt -- The classic chapter book, not the 2002 movie, follows a girl who meets an immortal family. Should she drink from the immortal spring too? What would happen if the spring that grants immortality is sold?

· Polar Express by Chris Van Allsburg -- Also made into a movie starring Tom Hanks, the beauty of a simple trip on a magical train to the North Pole is in the illustrations in this book.

· Charlotte’s Web by EB White -- Another classic that was turned into a movie, the spider Charlotte helps save "SOME PIG" with her wonderful weavings.
