Roads Closed in Preparation for Governor Debate

Drivers advised to take other routes, avoid Dominican.

Parking around the Dominican University of California will be limited beginning this weekend in anticipation of the Tuesday gubernatorial debate

The debate between Democrat Jerry Brown and Republican Meg Whitman begins at 6 p.m. tomorrow night. It will be moderated by NBC news' Tom Brokaw and will be broadcast on live TV. We will be running live updates from the debate for locals.

Traffic and parking limits will be enforced by the San Rafael Police Department. And you are encouraged to find alternative routes.

Beginning at 8 p.m. Sunday:

  • Olive Avenue will be accessible to residents and their guests only between Acacia and Palm avenues. 
  • Acacia Avenue will be closed between Grand and Magnolia avenues for all but residents and their guests.
  • The restrictions will be in effect until 6 a.m. Wednesday.

Beginning at 2 p.m. Tuesday:

  • Grand Avenue will be open to resident and event participants only. Through traffic will be detoured to Belle Avenue.
  • The 1300-block of Grand Avenue will be closed at Jewell Road and traffic will be diverted down Rafael Drive to Belle Avenue.
  • The 400-block of Jewel l Road and 100-block of Rafael Drive will be restricted to one-way traffic westbound to Belle Avenue.
  • Traffic at the north end of Grand Avenue at Belle Avenue will detour at Linden Lane and will flow down Elm Street to Belle Avenue.

No parking and tow-away areas:

  • Grand Avenue between Terradillo Avenue and Jewel l Road and between Watt and Mountain View avenues.
  • Jewel l Road at the 400-block west of Grand Avenue and the 100-block of Rafael Drive to Belle Avenue.
  • Acacia Avenue betwen Grand and Magnolia avenues.
  • Olive Avenue.
  • Palm Avenue from Olive Avenue to Magnolia Avenue.
  • A portion of the 900-block of Belle Avenue west of Grand Avenue.
  • All red zones on the 300-block of Jewel Street to Palm Avenue, and Palm Avenue to Olive Avenue.
