Things to Do on Memorial Day

Check out these events for the long weekend.

Don't forget these Memorial Day events happening Monday in the Ross Valley. Add your own events in the comments or let us know what you're doing for the holiday.

Monday: 

The American Legion Post 179 is hosting its annual Memorial Day Celebration at the Log Cabin. There will be a free bbq and live music plus all vets get their first drink free with military ID. The Women's Auxiliary will also be hosting a bake sale to raise money to send care packages to troops overseas. There will be an art show throughout the building with patriotic art by service men and civilians, with all the art work up for sale. The Dugout Bar will be open to the public all day -- the bar is for adults 21 and over, but kids are welcome in the hall and outside.

If you go: The celebration is from 1 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the Log Cabin, 120 Veterans Place in San Anselmo. The Dugout is a cash only bar and outside alcohol is not allowed. For more information call (415) 456-0834. 

Monday: 

The Marin County United Veterans Council will hold their annual Memorial Day services on honoring those who gave their lives in the service of our country. The service, which is free to the public, will be at the Veterans Memorial Auditorium at Marin Civic Center. The service will include band music, a Junior ROTC marching group, a military vehicle display and a wreath-laying service at the base of the memorials on Avenue of the Flags. Coffee and doughnuts will be served afterward. Guest speaker will be Col. John Lipinski of Travis Air Force Base.

If you go: Services begin at 9:30 a.m. at the Veterans Memorial Auditorium.

Monday: 

Put your training to the test and run one of the fastest 10K courses in the Bay Area. The Marin 10K is a flat, certified loop that kicks into high gear for a dramatic finish in the College of Marin stadium. Or challenge yourself to a walk, run, or racewalk in the Don Ritchie 5K. And don't forget the very popular and fun Youth Track Races for kids 12-and-under!

If you go: There are three ways to enter: (1) by mail; (2) online; and (3) in person on the morning of the race, between 6:30 and 7:30 a.m. Registration is $35, Youth Track Races are $5. A parent or guardian's signature is required for all entrants under 18. Registration is at the tennis courts at College of Marin, 835 College Ave. in Kentfield. The race starts next to Woodlands Market.

IN OTHER TOWNS:

Monday: 

Mill Valley begins celebrating Memorial Day with its annual  hosted by the Volunteer Firefighters. Stop by outside l between 7 a.m.and 11 a.m. for pancakes, eggs, juice, coffee, family, friends and community. Proceeds from the breakfast benefit local charities. 

If you go: Breakfast is $7 for adults and $5 for kids. The Masonic Hall is at 19 Corte Madera Ave. in Mill Valley.

The parade, which has a  of the , starts at 10:30 a.m. Floats, antique cars, public officials, the Tam High Jazz Band and a host of other marchers will make their way from  down Throckmorton Avenue and up Miller to .  Grab a chair and find a good view.

Sunday: 

The Larkspur Flower and Food Festival is now in its 22nd year and Magnolia Avenue is the perfect setting to enjoy summer offerings of nature’s bouquets and taste samples of the Bay Areas finest gourmet foods. There’s also Arts and Crafts and a kids corner complete with face painting and a Jumpy.  Live music includes Doc Kraft, James Mosley Band and Lavay Smith and her Red Hot Skillet Lickers. 

If you go: The celebration is from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Magnolia Avenue between Ward and King in downtown Larkspur.

Sunday: 

Come over to the Marin Greek Festival and enjoy authentic homemade Greek food, listen to music from the Helios Greek Band and dance with Minoan Dancers. There will be cooking demonstrations, children’s activities, a Greek marketplace, exhibits and more. This year's festival benefits Big Brothers Big Sisters of North Bay.

If you go: Weekend hours are 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. Park at the  Indian Valley Campus, 1800 Ignacio Blvd. in Novato or , 1000 Sunset Parkway in Novato and take the shuttle to the .
