Decision 2013: A San Anselmo-Fairfax Election Guide

Town Council seats are up for grabs in both towns. San Anselmo voters will cast their ballots on a sales tax measure.

City Council

With all three candidates in San Anselmo’s race for a four-year term running unopposed, the real action is on the junior varsity circuit, where three candidates are vying for one open two-year seat to replace appointee Liz Dahlgren on the Town Council.

Business owner Doug Kelly, commercial property broker Matt Brown and political consultant Stephen Burdo are all candidates for the two-year term.

Incumbents Kay Coleman (the current mayor) and Tom McInerney and Tamalpais Union High School District President John Wright are running unopposed for the three four-year terms.

Notes: Dahlgren’s April appointment followed Councilwoman Lori Lopin’s February resignation. … Sitting councilmembers Dahlgren and Jeff Kroot (the current Vice Mayor) opted out of this year’s council race.

 

Measure D

Sales Tax for San Anselmo Street Repair, Public Safety & Essential City Services Measure

A simple majority is required to approve this measure.

“To repair potholes, repave roads, reduce traffic congestion, maintain and improve sidewalks/drainage/street medians, preserve public safety, and improve other general Town services, facilities, and infrastructure, shall the Town of San Anselmo establish a one-half percent (.5%) sales tax for ten years, with annual independent audits, mandatory public expenditure reports, and an independent citizens' oversight committee with all funds staying in San Anselmo under local control?”

Fairfax

City Council

Fairfax voters will elect three candidates from a field of four vying for four-year terms. Incumbent Renee Goddard is running unopposed for an abbreviated two-year term.

Incumbents John Reed (the sitting mayor), Barbara Coler and David Weisenhoff will look to defend their seats against challenger Christopher Lang.

Notes: Reed’s appointment to the Mayorship in December made him the fourth consecutive Green Party member to take the city’s top post. …  Coler recently retired from her post as an Enforcement Manager for the Bay Area Air Quality Management District. … Weinsoff, an environmental attorney, founded the Fairfax Documentary Film Festival. … Lang founded the Marin County Bicycle Coalition and heads the Fairfax Chamber of Commerce. … Goddard was appointed to the council in February after Councilman Ryan O’Neil’s resignation.
