Would you like to help restore one of San Anselmo’s best-known
community assets? The Log Cabin, a venerable meeting place for almost 80 years,
is in need of some TLC.
American Legion Post 179, and the Women’s Auxiliary Unit 179, which calls the Log Cabin home, are holding a fundraiser Oct. 12 from 6-10 p.m.
to make repairs. The event will feature live music, food, silent auction and a
screening of a film showing the building of the Log Cabin.

The cabin has been used by various organizations for
classes, meetings, fundraisers, and social events. It has also been rented by individuals for
weddings, receptions, parties, reunions, family gatherings and memorial
services. It serves as a safe harbor for
returning veterans and provides them with a place to relax in the Dugout Bar
with a welcoming and supportive community.
The Dugout Bar is a community hub open to all Wednesday through Saturday
evenings. We would venture a guess that most Ross Valley residents have attended an event at the Log Cabin and many children have played on the guns displayed in front of the building. The Log Cabin is truly a local landmark and
historical structure.
After many years of use and exposure to the elements, the cabin
needs restoration and maintenance.
Currently there is a bid out for $41,000 to replace some of the redwood
logs and sealing between the logs. This is an expensive project and there is more work that needs to be done – a new roof, treatment for wood pests, and
other maintenance projects. We need the assistance and support of the community in raising the funds to preserve our beloved Log Cabin so it will be available for use by our children and
grandchildren.
