SAAC Presents: Kevin Lozaw Photography at Marin Coffee Roasters
For Ross Valley local Kevin Lozaw, a love of photography began in the dark room of his photography enthusiast grandfather. Kevin reminisces. “He was a photographer on the weekends before it was commonplace. He had a darkroom in his basement where I developed my first print. I watched it appear out of the ether. It was magical.” Photography remained a hobby for Lozaw throughout his teenage years, and continued during his career as a CPA and then Software Executive. Kevin attests, “As a CPA and business man, I had ample opportunity to use the left side of my brain. Photography allows me to use the rest of it”.
As a professional photographer, Kevin Lozaw sees himself as illustrating his mind’s vision thus describing his work as “Illustrative Photography”. Although all of his pieces begin as a traditional photograph, even a well-executed photograph might not accurately reflect the emotional content of the moment he is seeking. So begins a process of adding to, removing from, or modifying its content. Lozaw comments. “My images are not always strictly speaking, photography. Rather they the product of the a current, emerging trend: blending photography with other elements to create a new medium.” In striving to create images that compel the viewer to wander in and explore, Kevin looks for a picture with texture, contrast, or drama, but preferably all three.
There are several artistic greats that Kevin returns to continually for inspiration including Ansel Adams for his sheer grandeur and technical acumen, Wee Gee for his gritty human portrayal of life, and Francis Bacon for tapping into that dark brooding eeriness. He also enjoys former NY Times photographer Vincent Laforet for his unique eye with compelling imagery that stands out, demanding your attention, and former Marin IJ staff photographer Jeff Vendsel whom he credits in elevating the Marin IJ’s photojournalism to the top. Kevin Lozaw’s photographic exploration has taken him from color print and slide film, to high-speed infared film (his own version of heaven), and now on to digital imaging. Kevin comments. “The revolution that is digital imaging technology has opened up creative expression limited only by my imagination.” All these technological advances mean his creative journey isn’t over. In many ways, it has just begun. See more of Kevin Lozaw’s captivating photography at http://kevinlozaw.photoshelter.com/gallery-list .
