Sustainable Fairfax This Weekend: A Honey Bee Double Header

Honey bees are not only fascinating insects, but are also critically important to our food supply – a third of the food we eat is pollinated by the honey bee.  It is imperative that we support the bees and combat the current bee crisis, also called “colony collapse disorder.”

Sustainable Fairfax is devoting this weekend to the honey bee, starting with a showing of Queen of the Sun this Friday at the Fairfax Women’s Club at 8:00pm.  This movie is astoundingly beautiful and provides a stunning explanation of the extraordinary capabilities of the honey bee.  It also addresses the ramifications of colony collapse and the creative ways people are supporting the bee colonies.  Sara Knight, Associate Director of Communications for Pesticide Action Network, will provide comments after the film and answer questions.

On Saturday morning, Sustainable Fairfax is offering a Backyard Beekeeping Workshop, focusing on hive management and harvesting.  The workshop, led by Bonnie Bollingier Morse of Bonnie Bee and Company, is ideal for those who have started their own hives but are unsure about extracting honey and how to prepare for fall and winter. Please see the event page for more information.

And remember, when you see that bee buzzing around your head, don’t be afraid of a sting unless you are allergic – although painful, it has been found that bee venom has many health benefits!
