Huge Student Turnout for International Walk & Roll to School Day 2013

"Young children only have to try biking once to become hooked liked the rest of us,” said Barry Price, parent of Devyn, a first grade student at Manor Elementary School in Fairfax.  “Biking and walking to school just keeps growing and growing in popularity here.”

Thousands of K-12 students in Fairfax and San Anselmo celebrated International Walk & Roll to School Day 2013.  Fire truck and police escorts were held for all elementary schools in San Anselmo and Fairfax.

Safe Routes to Schools, a program of the Transportation Authority of Marin, reported record high participation levels at schools throughout the county.  Volunteer parent leaders at each school distributed colorful buttons to students as they arrived on campus. This annual event helps to emphasize the importance of physical activity for children, and raises awareness of the increased number of students biking and walking to and from school in our community.

Children and parents biked the new “Bike Spine” in Fairfax, a series of bright green bike markings called “sharrows.”  The new signage alerts motorists that bicyclists can share the road, and guide students to the recommended routes for safe travel to and from school. Town council members John Reed and Renee Goddard biked with students from Fairfax town hall to Manor Elementary to reinforce the safest routes to school.
