You Be the Judge: A Portrait of Marin

Study released details income, health, education and other stats about the towns in Marin. How do we stack up?

Last week, the American Human Development Project released it's Portrait of Marin (seen above) as part of its Measure of America studies. The goal of the studies is to provide a wealth of data on health, education, living standards and an index of human development to track these issues.

The data provides an interesting picture of our county.

In the index that attempts to quantify the well-being of residents on a ten-point scale, Marin gets a 7.75, while California earns only a 5.54 and the US a 5.1. Ross has the highest standard of living with a 9.7, while the Canal earned a lower score than the state of West Virginia - the lowest scoring state in the US - at 3.18. However, life expectancy in the Canal is not the lowest in the county. That distinction goes to Hamiltion, where people live only 75.2 years, compared to Ross's 88 years.

San Anselmo and Fairfax were right in the middle of the index. Sleepy Hollow earned an 8.62, Deer Park a 7.66, and the Hub area a 7.65. Southwest San Anselmo lagged behind at a 6.82 and Oak Manor was lowest in the Ross Valley with an index rating of 6.62.
