TAG, We’re It: Fairfax Library is “The Place” for Teens

The Fairfax Library's Teen Advisory Group has made almost as big an impact on the Library as the Library is having on the teens.

Fairfax Library now has a Teen Advisory Group (TAG) whose efforts have already made a substantial impact on the branch.  What’s even more impressive, by their efforts I can see the impact that libraries have had on them.

The first project TAG tackled was a deck beautification project.  Thanks to donations from Friends of the Library, Fairfax Lumber & Hardware, and O'Donnell's Fairfax Nursery, they were able to purchase pots, potting soil, and a wonderful variety of succulents.  The six teens who spent their Saturday here became happily filthy creating beautiful arrangements, and then celebrated with popsicles.  Our deck is now an even more inviting spot to sit and read, and I invite everyone to come admire it.

When Shereen, our Teen Librarian, told the group that Library staff would be marching in front of the Bookmobile during the Fairfax Parade, they were enthusiastic about marching with us and helping us decorate.  We wanted to adorn the Bookmobile with dots in the same colors as Marin County Free Library’s new logo, and the teens decided to write a word on each dot describing a service or benefit of the library.

Some of the words they’ve chosen are obvious: “Books,” “Fantasy,” “ Read!”  Some, like “Nook,” promote a newer service (did you know you can check out a pre-loaded Nook for free?  Read my for more info).

But some of the words these teenagers chose reflect their image of the library as more than a collection of materials.  The library has provided them with experiences that have helped shape their view of the world.

“Learn.”

“Community.”

“Imagine.”

“Friendship.”

“Magic.”

“Family.”

And my favorite: the dot that say “Librarians,” ornamented with little hearts.

Teens are still welcome to join the Fairfax Library Teen Advisory Group, where they can participate in fun activities, suggest library programs and materials, and connect with other teens.  For more information you can call Shereen at 457-5629, or e-mail her at sash@marincounty.org.

And don’t miss us marching in the Fairfax Parade this Saturday, where you’ll have a chance to hear the library cheer.  Yes, there really is a library cheer, and we’re going to teach it to you.

After the Parade, find the Bookmobile at the Festival, and take the opportunity to spin our wheel of fortune and win a prize.  Then walk down to our wonderful library where teens, adults or kids can sign up for Summer Reading.   With all our programs, movies, books, and of course air-conditioning, the Fairfax Library is the place to be this summer.
