Gardeners trying to incorporate sustainable earth practices often ask themselves: "What do I do with those darn plastic plant containers?" The goal, of course, is to get them reused or recycled.

I personally have been shopping at my local nursery, in San Anselmo, for 20 years, and didn't know until recently that they've been practicing the “Take Back” solution for years! If only I had asked about this sooner. So I share this news with those for whom it is news. And encourage you to ask at your favorite nursery if they will do the same.

Sunnyside, in downtown San Anselmo at 130 Sir Francis Drake Boulevard, next to Insalata's Restaurant, takes back the 5 gallon and larger containers.

In addition, it will take them back at its growing grounds at 3000 Sir Francis Drake, Fairfax (driving from the San Anselmo direction, it is on the right, just beyond White Hill School.)

You don’t have to have purchased the plant/container from them. You might want to call them first if you have a quantity of smaller than 5 gallon containers. Ask for Ross or Tom, the owners. They may know of a wholesaler/grower who will take them, or they themselves will if they don’t already have an adequate supply.

Another confirmed "take back" nursery is

Urban Tree Farm in Santa Rosa:  707 544-4446 www.urbantreefarm.com

They will take back 1 gallon and larger sizes.

OK, more rain please…
