Celebrate Sustainable Fairfax's 12th Anniversary

Sustainable Fairfax celebrates 12 years of accomplishments in our community with a special event on 10/1 at 5:30 p.m. There will be food, music, and special guests. Come join the fun!

On Oct. 1 at 5:30 p.m., will be celebrating its 12th anniversary with a night under the stars in our Sustainable Backyard. Helping us celebrate will be State Senator Mark Leno, Brock Dolman, Director of OAEC Water Initiative, and Deb Hubsmith, National Director of Safe Routes to Schools.

We’re pulling out the stops for this evening because we have a lot to be proud of! During the past 12 years, Sustainable Fairfax has grown to include a database of over 1,500 people. Through our events, classes, field trips, and weekly farmers market tabling, we now reach about 5,000 people per year. We have provided fantastic educational programs for the community ranging from Beekeeping for Beginners to a Harvest to Pantry Canning class. We provided the Sustainable Backyard as a permaculture demonstration space, and worked with other advocates on environmental issues, such as slowing the expansion of the Redwood landfill, preventing the need for desalinated water, and Stop the Spray for the Light Brown Apple Moth.

Over the years our accomplishments have included creating the pilot for plastic-free farmers markets in the Bay Area and running the campaign for the Fairfax plastic bag ban. We initiated the back to school bike and walk Lorax sign campaign, using fun arts and crafts to get kids ready to get safely to school. In partnership with the Marin Municipal Water District, we led workshops in rainwater harvesting, use of gray water, and water-wise planting.

This year, Sustainable Fairfax has been working closely with the North Bay Conservation Corps and Marin Sanitary Service to bring the community progressively toward Zero Waste. And, of course, Sustainable Fairfax led the launch of the , which has been a huge success in enhancing our local economy.

As Sustainable Fairfax has become a dynamic organization responding to community needs in the area of sustainable living, we celebrate the past and look forward to the future. As many may have noticed, ! During this transition, we will continue to focus on our key advocacy projects and our yearly events such as the Holiday Craft Fair on Dec. 10.
