If you spend time in Fairfax, you’ve heard of our shiny, golden-colored tokens that are worth $3 at many local businesses. Launched in 2011, the goals of the FairBuck project are to strengthen and increase awareness of our local economy, and to fund worthwhile community projects. A short year after launch, the FairBuck is paying back our starter loans and is also able to provide grants for local projects.
The Fairbuck has contributed $750 in cash and $250 in tokens for the upcoming event on August 26th. This event is bringing local businesses into the streets to showcase their products and services, bringing a breath of fresh air to our downtown commercial center. The FairBuck loan paybacks to the Chamber of Commerce and Sustainable Fairfax have also allowed those organizations to contribute funds to the Streets for People project.
In addition to Streets for People, we’re able to offer grants like one to the to provide art supplies, new books for the library, and science equipment. Grants are given in a combination of cash and FairBucks, giving organizations the chance to use Fairfax vendors for their projects.
The FairBuck has also awarded a grant to the , which is a nonprofit whose mission is to provide affordable, high quality, professional holistic health care, transforming the way our community takes care of itself by creating a thriving organization that supports clients, practitioners, and the community. The center is going to use the grant to help pilot a community-supported health/wellness service.
The FairBuck team will be at Streets for People this Sunday. Stop by our booth to find out more about our grant program, and to get your 2012 tokens!
