The 2012 FairBuck is Here …and Working for Fairfax!

The 2012 FairBuck, which now provides micro-grants for community projects, will be available at the EcoFest! If you can't make it there, ask for it in change at our participating businesses.

If you’re a Fairfax regular, you’ve probably come across a FairBuck – a shiny, gold token that can be used like cash at many Fairfax businesses. The FairBuck Board, a non-profit project spearheaded by the Town of Fairfax, the Fairfax Chamber of Commerce, Sustainable Fairfax and members of the pubic, is excited to share our latest news.

Supporting Local Economy

The 2011 FairBuck was a great success. We exchanged 95 percent of the first minting in less than 6 months, and kept 5 percent kept on hand for business needs. That’s more than $14,000 in tokens put into circulation by volunteers and our 40+ FairBuck businesses! That success has lead to a lot of local shopping, a lot of new customer relationships, and a lot of new awareness of the power of local economy.

The FairBuck Project Grants Program: Powering Fairfax Community Development

Going forward, the FairBuck team will apply $1 out of every $3 token to a non-profit community project fund. This fund will create micro-grants ($500-$1,000) for approved non-profit projects in Fairfax. Soon, businesses, residents, and organizations in Fairfax will be able to submit proposed projects, using our grant application process. That means that every FairBuck in circulation is not only directing traffic to local Fairfax businesses, but also building community infrastructure at the same time!
