CHP to Set Up DUI Checkpoint in Marin Friday Night

Checkpoint will be at an undisclosed location in an unincorporated – or outside city limits – section of the county, CHP officials said.

The California Highway Patrol is setting up a DUI checkpoint somewhere in the unincorporated – or outside city limits – section of Marin County this Friday night, CHP officials said.

CHP Officer Andrew Barclay said the checkpoint is funded by a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. The agency renewed Marin's funding last October for its countywide DUI checkpoint program in the form of a $200,000 grant to Marin County’s DUI task force.

The San Rafael Police Department administers the program, which includes the following agencies:

“[The anti-DUI campaigns] have been an essential part of the phenomenal reduction in DUI deaths that we witnessed from 2006 to 2010 in California,” Christopher J. Murphy, director of the Office of Traffic Safety, said at that time.  “But since the tragedy of DUI accounts for nearly one third of traffic fatalities, Marin County needs the high visibility enforcement and public awareness that this grant will provide.”
