Distressed Windsurfer Rescued near Tomales Bay

The Sonoma County Sheriff's helicopter was already on a routine patrol when its crew heard of a windsurfer in distress near the mouth of the West Marin bay.

A windsurfer in the water near Tomales Bay in Marin County was rescued by helicopter Thursday evening, according to Sonoma County Sheriff's deputies.

At about 5:47 p.m. the crew of the Sonoma County Sheriff's helicopter "Henry-One" on a routine air-patrol heard a transmission from Marin County Fire Department requesting an ocean rescue for a windsurfer near the mouth of Tomales Bay.

The U.S. Coast Guard and Marin County Emergency personnel also responded to assist with the ocean rescue, deputies said.

The deputies in the helicopter located the distressed windsurfer in the water. He was clinging to his board and waving his arms to signal that he was in need of help, according to deputies.

The helicopter pilot and crew conducted a long-line rescue and brought the windsurfer to safety, deputies said.

According to sheriff's deputies, the windsurfer was brought to the shore at Dillon Beach where emergency crews were waiting to assist him.
