Firefighter Outreach Program Headed to Marin Classrooms

The program aims to teach basic fire safety and prevention tips.

By Bay City News

Firefighters in San Rafael will be visiting kindergarten and fifth grade classrooms to teach important skills, officials said.

The outreach, which began on Oct. 1 and runs through mid-November, allows firefighters to teach kids in kindergarten basic fire safety and prevention and fifth graders emergency preparedness skills, fire officials said.

Firefighters warn that emergencies can strike quickly without warning, and can be frightening for adults and children, especially if they don't know what to do, according to officials.

Kindergartners will learn some of the most common causes of home fires; how to recognize dangers; and what to do in case there is a fire at their home, officials said.

Fifth graders, through the "Get Ready 5th Grade" program, will learn about potential emergencies in the San Rafael area; how to prepare emergency planes; and how to stock emergency food, supply and first-aid kits, officials said.

The firefighters will visit every elementary school in San Rafael during the outreach.
