At about 6 p.m. last night Patch began receiving reports of fire trucks and sirens in the Ross Valley San Anselmo-Fairfax border area from several different sources.

A “wire down” report was received for Wood Lane in Fairfax at about 5:30 pm, and a single truck responded to find that a transformer had blown, and a live electrical wire was on the ground. At the scene residents alerted respondents to smoke coming from a nearby barn, the historic Marin Stables.

The smoke was from a fire in a residential unit on the second story of the barn. Due to its relative inaccessibility, additional units were called in. Eventually five different departments –from Ross Valley, Kentfield, Larkspur, San Rafael and Marin County – showed up at the site.

Because the fire was a horse stables with animals present, the Humane Society was also alerted to handle the horses.

The fire was extinguished by 6:30, with significant damage to a portion of the stables, primarily in the residential area. There were no injuries to people or animals, Hanson reported.

Due to the busy Saturday night foot traffic in downtown Fairfax, suggested Hanson, the spectacle of fire trucks with sirens sounding and lights blazing responding to the call probably accounted for a number of the messages to Patch and other media.

The investigation of the cause of the fire and its possible relation to the initial “wire down” report is continuing. Estimates of damage in square footage and dollars will be forthcoming shortly.

Marin Stables is a historic horse boarding stables (established in 1937). More about the stables is on their Facebook page.
