Mountain Lion Sighted on Redwood Road

Unconfirmed sighting; residents advised not to feed deer or wild animals.

Thursday night around 7:45 p.m., an 11-year-old boy reported to his father that he saw a mountain lion on the 400 block of Redwood Road, who reported it to the San Anselmo Police Department.

According to police, the description of the animal given to the father and to officers could be a mountain lion. Officers responded, but did not see a mountain lion in the area.

The California Department of Fish and Game, along with the Marin Humane Society, was notified of a possible sighting.

Officers also went door-to-door and distributed pamphlets on how to prevent conflicts with mountain lions. Residents are reminded not to feed deer; it is illegal in California and will attract mountain lions. Residents are also reminded not to allow pets outside at dawn, dusk or at night when lions are most active and to avoid leaving pet food outside, which will attract raccoons and smaller animals, which will attract mountain lions.

If you encounter a mountain lion, do not run. Instead, face the animal, make noise, and try to bigger by waving your arms, throwing rocks or other objects. If attacked, fight back.
