Novato 20-Year-Old Suspected of Driving Drunk Hits Fire Hydrant near Kentfield

A Novato man was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence early Saturday morning after driving his car into a fire hydrant in Kent Woodlands.

A fire hydrant, located on Woodland Road north of Upland Road in unincorporated Kentfield, was dislodged in the crash and large amounts of water were pouring from the open valve, according to California Highway Patrol officials.

The driver, 20-year-old Jose Manuel Rivera Ortega, told officers he had been involved in the crash. Officers found his vehicle, a 2009 Mazda 3, off the east side of Woodland Road.

Officers noticed Ortega showed “objective signs of intoxication,” according to the California Highway Patrol.

Ortega was arrested and booked into Marin County Jail on suspicion of DUI with a blood alcohol content greater than .08 percent, driving on a suspended license, being under 21 with a blood alcohol content greater than .05 percent.
