Police Arrest Marin Man Linked to San Anselmo Vegetation Fire

The Marin resident was found at Red Hill Shopping Center with minor burns on his face.

Central Marin Police Authority officers arrested a 52-year-old Marin man Thursday after he was linked to a Thursday afternoon fire that burned around one acre near Memorial Park in San Anselmo, according to police officials. 

Officers from the Marin County Sheriff’s Department, Fairfax Police Department and Ross Police Department responded to the fire to help with evacuations, traffic and crowd control.

A witness tipped off an officer at the scene that a man they thought was responsible for the fire was at the Red Hill Shopping Center, according to a Central Marin Police Authority Nixle alert

The man, Douglas Hall Shumate, was taken to Marin General Hospital for treatment of minor face burns before he was arrested on suspicion of starting a fire on public lands.

Shumate was living on the hill, according to the Marin Independent Journal, and a improperly disposed of match may have been the culprit in the blaze.

He was booked into Marin County Jail in lieu of $10,000 bail. Shumate, who is unemployed, listed his place of residence as San Rafael in the booking log. He is also facing probation violation charges.
