President Obama Speaks About Connecticut Shooting

"I know there's not a parent in America who doesn't feel the overwhelming grief that I do," said President Obama.

On the heels of the tragic elementary school shooting in Newtown, Conn., Friday morning, President Obama made a call to action, saying, "We're going to have to come together and take meaningful action to prevent more tragedies like this regardless of the politics."

I believe President Obama was sincere in expressing his heartfelt anguish over this horrendously sad tragedy that befell the community of Newtown, Conn.. I can't imagine any words that would actually comfort a parent that had lost a dear child in this senseless massacre. This was a horrible event for our nation to experience. A statement of sadness and concern from our President is only appropriate to help bring us together as we try to overcome our collective shock and profound grief. However, if President Obama is serious about stopping this type of mass violence, then he needs to get much stricter with the pharmaceutical industry regarding antidepressants or SSRIs. More often than not, antidepressants play a role in these murderous tragedies. We are over-medicating our children without fully understanding the possible side effects or potential dangers of these drugs. Approximately 5% of the 2 million kids currently taking antidepressants will exhibit some form of maniacal behavior including suicide and/or homicide. That's a heck of a lot of emotionally twisted and violent kids that the drug industry doesn't want to talk about or acknowledge. I inadvertantly limited my previous comment to kids and antidepressant-related violent behavior because of the larger proportion of mass violence perpetrated by children in our schools as opposed to mass violence in schools perpetrated by adults. However, people of any age taking SSRI drugs can suffer the same possible violent symptoms.
