Stolen Car Likely Set Ablaze Near Point Reyes, Police Say

A Ford Escape reported stolen out of Rohnert Park was found on fire early Wednesday morning, according to law enforcement officials.

 

A car reported stolen vehicle out of Rohnert Park was found on fire in West Marin and extinguished early Wednesday morning, according to the California Highway Patrol.

CHP Officer Ralph Caggiano said the car fire on Point Reyes-Petaluma Road near Platform Bridge Road was reported at 2:39 a.m.

The car, a 2004 Ford Escape, had previously been reported to authorities as stolen vehicle out of Rohnert Park, according to Marin County Sheriff’s Sgt. Mark Hale.

CHP Officer Peter Van Eckhardt said the vehicle had been abandoned in a remote area near Point Reyes Station.

"It appears somebody may have stolen the vehicle and burned it," Van Eckhardt said, adding that the car thief may have driven out to the isolated area, set the car on fire and fled the scene with the assistance of a driver in a different car.

Hale said the Sheriff’s Office is investigating the incident as a possible arson.
