The fire was reported around 4:15 p.m. on a steep area behind the shopping center and near San Anselmo Memorial Park, Marin County Fire Department Battalion Chief Mike Giannini said.

The fire was behind the Memorial Park ball field and near the American Legion Log Cabin and Dugout Bar, Lewis said.

It was fully contained at 5:25 p.m., Lewis said.

Two CAL Fire tanker planes made two drops on the fire, which “really assisted us in getting containment quickly,” Lewis said.

Giannini said the blaze had charred grassy areas of the hill and some eucalyptus trees.

The evacuations were done as a “precautionary measure” because of the highly-flammable trees in the area, Lewis said.

No injuries had been reported, according to officials.

The blaze reportedly sent smoke into San Rafael neighborhoods, including Terra Linda and Gerstle Park, according to comments on the San Rafael Patch Facebook page.

Brenda Dahl wrote on the San Rafael Patch Facebook page that she was evacuated from her workplace behind Red Hill around 4:30 p.m. “There were flames visible on the hillside above Millenium park,” she wrote.

Other commenters reported smelling smoke from Highway 101 in San Rafael and seeing smoke from the Richmond - San Rafael Bridge.

Officials from the Ross Valley Fire Department, Marin County Fire Department and Central Marin Police Authority were involved in the incident.
