Warning: Mountain lion sighted

Possible mountain lion sighted in San Anselmo; take precautions.

The San Anselmo Police Department is advising residents of a possible mountain lion sighting at Redwood and Gerlack Roads. Mountain lions are part of the natural landscape of Marin County and are occasionally seen in town. Throughout the year, mountain lions take advantage of opportunities within residential neighborhoods.

It is not uncommon for mountain lions to be seen in urban areas, especially those that adjoin open space. There are a number of things that you and your neighbors can do to ensure that these animals stay wild and neighborly.

  • Don't feed deer; it is illegal in California and it will attract mountain lions.
  • Deer-proof your landscaping by avoiding plants that deer like to eat. For tips, request A Gardener's Guide to Preventing Deer Damage from Department of Fish and Game offices.
  • Trim brush to reduce hiding places for mountain lions.
  • Don't leave small children or pets outside unattended.
  • Install motion-sensitive lighting around the house.
  • Provide sturdy, covered shelters for sheep, goats, and other vulnerable animals.
  • Don't allow pets outside when mountain lions are most active – dawn, dusk, and at night.
  • Bring pet food inside to avoid attracting raccoons, opossums, and other potential mountain lion prey.

If you do see a mountain lion, please contact the Marin Humane Society at 415-883-4621. If an emergency exists, please dial 9-1-1.
